While planning for a Program Increment (PI) using the PI page, you must remember a couple of important points that would help you get a complete clarity over the PI planning.

Cards Shown in PI Scope Versus Cards Considered in the Burndown Chart

The cards shown in the PI Scope will always be those which belong to the current Work Board level. So, if you are looking at the PI Scope from a program-level Board, it will only show you the cards which belong to that Program-level Board. That Program-level Board may have Child-level Team Boards, but they will not be visible in the PI panel of the Program-level Board.

But, if you view the Burndown chart of that PI from the same Program-level Board, it will fetch the data not only from that Program-level Board but also from its child-level Team Boards. So, all the cards spread across the program and Team-level Boards and tagged to that PI will be considered in the Burndown chart.

Selecting Value for the ART and Team field

Depending on the value that you are selecting for the ART and Team field on the PI panel, the following changes can be observed:

  • Certain PI planning activities can be performed or restricted, such as drag-drop cards from Not in PI column to PI Scope column an so on.
  • The data shown on some indicators like Capacity Indicators, Card Count and Progress Indicators Indicator will be populated accordingly.

Now, let us understand these changes in detail when you select various combinations of ART and Team field values.

When you select the value ALL for the ART field and ALL for the Team field in the PI panel

  • All the cards that are tagged to the PI are displayed under the PI Scope column. Based on the column type they are distributed into, they will either be in To-Do, Doing or Done sub-column.
  • All those cards will be considered for the PI Burndown chart and the Burndown chart icon will also be visible from the PI panel.
  • Drag-drop of cards from the Not in PI column to PI Scope column will be disabled as one needs to select at least a Team to tag a card to the PI Scope.
  • The capacity field is disabled and in read-only mode as no particular Team is selected.
  • Card Count will also be visible on the PI panel which is the aggregated number of all the cards assigned to that PI spread across all ARTs and Teams.
  • Capacity Indicator will also be visible which indicates to what extent the PI is booked.
  • Progress Indicator will be visible which shows a percentage of points or To-Do values achieved over the total points or To-Do values scoped in the PI.
